ASPS Supports Patient Safety

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently announced its support for The Healthcare Truth and Transparency Act of 2007, which was recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. The ASAPS is known as the world’s largest organization of board certified plastic surgeons.

How the Act Works

The legislation would force physicians and others providing medical services to be upfront and clear about themselves and their offerings across all advertising mediums. Specifically, the measure would prohibit false statements about education, skills, and training that could lead potential patients to mistake a person for a medical doctor or practitioner of osteopathic medicine.

“This bill will help avoid consumer confusion and protect against inappropriately delivered medical care,” states Scot Glasberg, MD and council chair of governmental affairs for ASPS.

Patient Safety

By creating a uniform policy, the Act would help ensure that consumers nationwide are not misled when it comes to receiving health care and medical services.

“Unfortunately, there are abundant examples of this type of deceptive advertising across the country,” says Roxanne Guy, MD and ASPS president. “ASPS is committed to upholding the highest patient education standards to ensure safety.”
