Business is booming for medical spas in the United States. “Cosmedical” clinics, as they’re sometimes referred to, offer patients an array of minimally invasive procedures in a spa-like setting. The first clinics began cropping up in 2002 when Botox gained FDA approval. Today, there are as many as 2,500 medical spas across the country.

The rapid growth in the medical spa industry is hardly a surprise. In the 21st century, cosmetic surgery is “a daily fact of life,” said Benjamin Akande of the School of Business and Technology at Webster University in St. Louis.

Minimally invasive procedures such Botox injections, which can be performed quickly and conveniently, are only increasing in popularity. In fact, Botox topped the list of minimally invasive procedures with nearly 4 million treatments performed last year alone.

To cater to the growing number of consumers seeking out Botox and similar treatments, medical spas are moving to more convenient locations like malls and retail shopping centers.

However, consumers should be cautious of patronizing medical spas since not all require their practitioners to be plastic surgeons or dermatologists. According to experts in the field, consumers should look for spas that are either affiliated with a reputable medical institution or are directed by qualified cosmetic surgeons.
