A report issued by the American Society for Plastic Surgery suggests that increasing numbers of men are seeking plastic surgery procedures for different reasons than one might expect.   Also reported was a turn from non-surgical procedures to surgical procedures among men, who are now undergoing surgeries such as facelifts, eyelid surgery, forehead lifts, chemical peels, liposuction and other cosmetic enhancements. 

Male plastic surgery is experiencing a rise in age groups seeking cosmetic improvement.  While in 2002, the average male cosmetic surgery patient typically ranged in age between 30 and 40, more and more men in their fifties are now undergoing plastic surgery. 

Research shows that these shifts in the plastic surgery field may be due more to economic reasons than social.  When polled regarding reasons for seeking cosmetic surgery, few men reported job related concerns prior to 2002.  The economic downfall however, experienced after 2002, presented a change in these results. 

The ASPS found in their research that the majority of men nowadays are seeking plastic surgery due to job related concerns.  The men are not necessarily seeking employment, but rather ensuring their spot at their current place of employment.  Older men seem to feel that their job security is threatened by younger candidates with less credential but the right look and substantial potential, thus leading them to surgical procedures that keep them looking sharp and able.

Other important factors when men are considering plastic surgery procedures are minimal recovery time and positive but subtle results.  Men don’t want to be away from work or their lives for extended periods of time and while most men are seem to be open about their cosmetic procedures, they do not want a significantly noticeable change to their appearance. 

The study, which examined patients at the Sammamish Center for Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, showed that men comprise approximately 17 percent of all patients undergoing cosmetic surgery.
