More Men Requesting "Beauty" Surgery
On the Reba show, Reba’s ex Brock entered her house unable to smile or talk very well. When she asked him why he didn’t smile, Brock said, “I had some work done—injections of Botox,” and his face remained expressionless.
Nowadays, men are exercising, eating healthier and many have eliminated bad habits like smoking to retain the beauty and youth of their body and face. The pressure—at home, work and even self-inflicted—to look youthful is what turns men to cosmetic surgery.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), from 2000 to 2005, there has been a 44% increase in minimally invasive procedures among men. Men desire quick ways to boost their looks. The most popular treatments requested by men include Botox, microdermabrasion and laser hair removal.
“Men want to know, ‘When am I going to be really ready to go back to the office?’” said Dr. Richard D’Amico, President Elect of the ASPS and a plastic surgeon in Englewood, N.J.
Botox on the Rise
Recent statistics on Botox treatment for men by the ASPS are astonishing. Statistics show that Botox injections among men increased more than 200% between 2000 and 2006.
Dr. David McDaniel, Virginia-based director of the Institute of Anti-Aging Research, credits this increase to the mainstream acceptance of Botox and the fact that more doctors have mastery of the technique needed to create a more natural and youthful effect for men.
According to an article presented by CBS Healthwatch, when it comes to getting cosmetic treatments such as Botox, men tend to visit the plastic surgeon in their mid-40’s and woman start much earlier.
Other Plastic Surgeries Popular with Men
Besides Botox, other procedures that men are opting for more frequently these days include:
- Gynecomastia (breast reduction)—male breast tissue is removed surgically by cutting, or with liposuction
- Calf and pectoral implants— to bulk up the chest and calves
- Facial implants—particularly jaw, chin, and cheek implants to project more masculine features
- Hair removal—laser hair removal of unwanted hair
- Hair replacement—non-surgical hair restoration, transplanting and hair loss treatments
- Penile enhancement—enlargement of the penis
Currently women account for the bulk of cosmetic procedures being performed, but the ASPS report that last year men accounted for 13% of all procedures. This leads one to believe that beauty and youth are important to both sexes.
The appearance of beauty and youth were certainly important to Brock, as indicated by his final comment to Reba, “Do I look any better?”
