Microliposuction: Simpler Approach to Slimming Down
Liposuction is the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States. However, for patients who want to loose those stubborn fat pockets without major surgery and a long recovery period, microliposuction provides a simpler, less invasive approach to slimming down.
Tumesent Liposuction or microliposuction is different than traditional liposuction in that the procedure uses smaller cannulas, stainless steel tubes, to remove excess fat. The cannulas used in traditional liposuction range anywhere from five to 10 millimeters, which require bigger incisions and more noticeable scars.
The cannulas used in microliposuction are between one and three millimeters and are only able to extract three liters of fat at a time, according to Dr. Steven Lewis who has performed the surgery on almost two dozen patients.
Microliposuction is simpler, less invasive, and requires very little down time. The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and uses local anesthesia so that patients can quickly return to their normal activities.
“It's not as noticeable or traumatic as (traditional liposuction). I've had patients who have had the procedure on Friday and are back to work on Monday,” Lewis said.
However, Lewis admits that microliposuction is not to be performed as a method of weight loss, but for those who want to slim down stubborn problem areas that won't go away with diet and exercise.
Microliposuction can be performed on most fatty areas of the body such as the hips, waist, and lower back. The procedure costs around $3,500.
