More Minorities Opting for Plastic Surgery

According to research, more than 2.5 million minorities received plastic surgery in 2006, accounting for 23 percent of all plastic surgery patients that year.

More minorities are going under the knife, not to look like a Caucasian, but to look like a better version of themselves.

Types of Surgeries Being Performed

For Asian and African Americans, nose reshaping is the most common form of surgery requested, as reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Middle Eastern patients tend to want the size of their nose reduced or a bump removed, while Hispanic patients want rhinoplasty and eye lid surgery.

Tyra Whittaker, an African-American, received a nose job right before her wedding.

“Because I’m getting married, I didn’t want to be standing in front of people and have them look at my profile,” explains Whittaker, “This was just something I always wanted to do.”

Why the Sudden Increase?

Plastic surgeons across the country believe that there are several factors that attribute to the sudden increase in minorities getting plastic surgery.

TV shows like Extreme Makeover and The Swan are said to have a huge impact on the way plastic surgery is viewed in society today.

Minorities are also more affluent and they are able to spend their extra money on such procedures.

The popularity of celebrities like J. Lo, Beyonce and Lucy Lui is also a contributing factor.

“It’s no longer this Nicole Kidman look that spans everything for everyone,” says Dr. David Watts, a plastic surgeon in Philadelphia. “People are really looking at what’s considered beautiful, and I think it’s starting to cross all of these ethnic borders.”
