A new treatment to remedy the problem of cellulite has recently been approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration.  The Velasmooth procedure combines radio frequency heat and infrared light to target cellulite below the skin level.

The benefit of Velasmooth in comparison with older cellulite treatments is in its ability to penetrate as far as 15 millimeters below the skin level.  It is currently the deepest penetrating cellulite treatment on the market.

Velasmooth, which is performed by applying a suction-cup-like device to the areas of the body affected by cellulite, reportedly feels similar to receiving a heated massage.  While one patient claims to have noticed a difference after just two treatments, most doctors will recommend receiving bi-weekly treatments for a period of ten weeks.

In a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy, 18 out of 20 women reported noticing less visible cellulite after eight weeks of treatments.

While many doctors commend the progress made with the Velasmooth treatment, Dr. Heidi Waldorf reminds us that there is still no definite cure for cellulite.

“The small studies that exist have shown some benefits, but we don’t know if there is any long term benefit to improving cellulite,” commented the doctor.  She added however, “Scientifically, it makes sense that a machine like Velasmooth could improve the appearance of cellulite temporarily.”

Velasmooth typically costs about $150 per session, but multiple sessions will probably be necessary to notice results.

Velasmooth patient, Katie Borst claims that she finished her treatments last summer and can still not see her cellulite.  “I can finally wear shorts, I am a little bit worried that it will come back, but I will definitely come back for more treatments.”

Borst spent an estimated $3000 total on her Velasmooth treatments.
