A condition called lipodystrophy, facial wasting that causes a gaunt appearance, has historically plagued HIV/AIDS patients with social discrimination. As an identifying characteristic of the disease, lipodystrophy often jeopardizes an individual's privacy by exposing their HIV status.

However, a new permanent facial filler, although not yet available in the U.S., could eventually help those afflicted with HIV combat the devastating social and psychological effects of the disease. A study published in this month's issue of Dermatologic Surgery found that the new treatment proves immediately effective at filling out the face.

“HIV patients with severe facial lipodystrophy who used a treatment of polyalklimide dermal filler injections saw immediate correction and restoration of facial contour as well as improvements in self-perception, social functioning, anxiety and depression scores,” said David J. Goldberg, a New York dermasurgeon.

Dr. Golberg expressed optimism about the capacity of the new filler to help HIV patients put their best face forward. In fact, four of his patients “felt they had been able to obtain different employment as a direct result of the procedure.”
