Non-surgical eyelift
Cosmetic surgeons are now using a soft dermal filler to rejuvenate the eyes without surgery. With traditional eye lift surgery (blepharoplasty), a surgeon makes an incision in the lower eyelid to remove fat and loose skin, to reduce the appearance of sunken and tired eyes. With a non-surgical eye lift procedure, the surgeon injects dermal filler into the depression under the eye, effectively camouflaging the bags. “Fill the valley and the mountain doesn’t look so tall.” This is the concept behind a non-surgical eye lift, says Dr. Mike Nayak of the Saint Louis University Hospital School of Medicine.
One soft filler used in a non-surgical eye lift is a hyaluronic acid-based soft tissue filler called Restylane. Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate-based compound found naturally throughout the body. Many dermal fillers used in non-surgical eye lifts are approved by the FDA for cosmetic use. Restylane, for example, was approved by the FDA in January 2004. Within its one year stay on the market, the popularity of Restylane and similar products like Hylaform increased by more than 900 percent.
The optimal candidate for a non-surgical eyelift is a person with a small increase in the bulge beneath the eye. There are a number of benefits of this non-surgical blepharoplasty procedure. This procedure is done with a local anesthetic, instead of a general anesthetic. The non-surgical eyelift procedure takes less than one hour to complete and requires no recovery time. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately following the procedure. The most serious side effects associated with non-surgical eye lifts are mild bruising or swelling that typically disappears shortly.
Non-surgical eye lift is also much less expensive than traditional blepharoplasty. The average cost of blepharoplasty nationwide is over $2,500, not including additional compulsory costs. The cost of a non-surgical eyelift treatment is between $300 and $1,000.
While there are a number of benefits to the non-surgical procedure, there are also some limitations. The results of a non-surgical eyelift do not last as long as the results of blepharoplasty. A patient with a non-surgical eyelift may require a touchup procedure every three to six months to maintain their satisfying results.
