A new study conducted by researchers at Yale examined the influence that plastic surgery reality shows have on viewers.

The researchers wanted to find out whether reality shows influence patients’ decision to go under the knife.

Study Conducted

Researchers polled 42 first-time patients to determine whether or not they are influenced by television shows like “Extreme Makeover” and “Dr.90210.”

The patients analyzed were ones who sought a consultation at Yale’s plastic surgery clinic.

Each of the patients who were participating were asked how often they watch reality shows focused on plastic surgery.

Patients Found to be Influenced by Reality TV

The lead researcher of the study, John Persing, and his colleagues found that 57 percent of patients regularly watched plastic surgery TV shows.

Of these frequent viewers, they cited the TV shows as being a significant factor in their decision to get plastic surgery.

Racial Differences

The research also found that there were significant racial differences between the participants.

About 75 percent of Hispanics and 70 percent of African Americans said they were frequent viewers of reality television.

In comparison, only 36 percent of whites said they watched shows regularly.

Nearly all of those surveyed were females.
