Plastic Surgery and Deep Vein Thrombosis
Plastic surgery complications risks are low. Yet, plastic surgery can be costly should a complication such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) occur. Deep Vein Thrombosis is defined by a blood clot located in a vein, often the calf. Pulmonary embolism refers to severed clot fragments that create barriers in the pulmonary artery. Signs of deep vein thrombosis include: warmth, redness, and tenderness. Yet, typical symptoms may not be apparent. DVT may not only result in PE, but there is also a risk for recurring DVT or PE, venous incompetence and post phlebitic syndrome.
At the recent American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery meeting, plastic surgeons gathered to discuss DVT and PE. During the meeting, it was noted that the reported risk of DVT is 1.4%-3% in abdominoplasty patients, 6.6% in abdominoplasty combination surgery patients, and 9.4% in lower body lift procedure patients. Statistics indicate that up to 35% of all DVT’s move to other veins and may result in pulmonary embolism when left untreated.
Pulmonary embolism is the leading cause of preventable death after surgery. The highest risk for DVT is up to 7 days post surgery. Increased risk factors for DVT are: general anesthesia for persons over 40, surgery more than one hour’s time, estrogen use, abdominal surgery, varicose veins, obesity and malignancy.
Of all types of surgery, pulmonary embolism accounted for 600,000 hospitalizations in 2001.In 2004, the average cost to treat DVT was over $10,000 and PE was in excess of $14,000. DVT therapy may include intravenous thromboprophylaxis or chemoprophylaxis treatment. Special care during treatment must be taken to select the right drug, dosage, timing and duration.
This represents another reason why it is important for people interested in plastic surgery to seek out plastic surgeons who are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only board in plastic surgery that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.
