Plastic Surgery Pre and Post Op Essentials
Plastic surgery requires precise pre-operative and post-operative regimens to produce the most favorable results. As Dr. Wilke of Edina Minnesota explains, “The post operative process can be rigorous when people do not follow pre and post operative instructions.”
In plastic surgery, it is imperative to follow pre-operative and post operative instructions to reduce discomfort, decrease the risk of complications, and optimize results. In fact, plastic surgeons may refuse to treat patients who do not disclose relevant patient history information or are not prepared to adhere to pre and post operative instructions.
During an initial consultation, your plastic surgeon will provide a complete list of pre-operative instructions. Some of the common pre-operative instructions include:
1. Disclosure of use for all medications, over the counter drugs, vitamins and natural supplements.
2. Disclosure of all past and present medical conditions, including any past difficulty with anesthesia.
3. Discontinue select medications, over the counter drugs, vitamins, and natural supplements.
4. Medications that must be taken prior to the procedure.
5. No food or drink after midnight the day before the procedure.
A check list of post operative instructions will be supplied as well. Post operative instructions vary among plastic surgeons, the procedures and technique, including:
1. An escort to drive you home after the procedure and stay with you for a duration designated by your doctor.
2. Medications that should be taken after the procedure which may include preventative antibiotic treatment, pain medication, anti-inflammatory drugs, wound healing remedies, scar reduction therapy, and stool softeners.
3. Restrictions in diet.
4. The limit of daily activities and specific directives for necessary daily activities.
Since plastic surgeons provide pre and post operative instructions in advance of treatment, review them with your caregiver. Prepare by investigating recovery aids and inquire about the type of recovery aids that will be necessary for your procedure in advance of your surgery date. In the end, you can be rewarded with a smoother recovery and enhanced results.
