Protecting Your Skin From the Sun
A recent lawsuit filed against sunscreen manufacturers alleges the products labels claiming “waterproof” and “sunblock” protection are misleading to consumers who believe that one application will protect against the sun all day. It doesn't.
However, despite the legal battle, sunscreen still offers the best protection if used properly. According to the American Cancer Society, almost 11,000 people this year will die from skin cancer, particularly melanoma, the most severe form of the cancer.
Follow these tips to protect your skin from the sun this summer:
• Be sure to use sunscreen daily even on cloudy days, since 80 percent of the dangerous ultraviolet rays pass through the clouds.
• Wear sunscreen regardless of your skin type. Everyone should wear at least an SPF 15, but if you are lighter skinned or more prone to burn, a higher SPF would be appropriate.
• Apply a thick layer of sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before heading out into the sun. Be sure to reapply every two hours or after swimming or heavy sweating.
• Always remember to apply sunscreen to lips and ears, which are sensitive areas of the skin.
• If possible, avoid spending time in the sun between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when the harmful rays are the strongest.
