Radiesse, a new cosmetic wrinkle filler, gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval last week, offering men and women more cosmetic options for their facial folds.
The filler, manufactured by BioForm medical, is said to last longer than existing fillers used to treat mild to severe nasolabial folds, or frown lines.
Radiesse consists of calcium-based microsphere technology that works to stimulate collagen production to fill facial lines and treat facials depressions, recreating the original contour and fullness of the face.
The FDA has expanded the terms of approval for Radiesse, which in 2002 was approved only for facial reconstructive procedures. Now, those who are looking for younger, healthier looking skin as well as patients with AIDS who suffer from lipoatrophy—significant facial fat loss—can enjoy the cosmetic benefits of this alternative wrinkle filler.
