Studies show that there are more options available to breast cancer patients who need mastectomies than ever before.
However, according to plastic surgeons, few survivors are aware of the various procedures available to them.
How Reconstructive Surgery Can be Beneficial
Reconstructive surgery's principle benefit is to improve the overall quality of life for those recovering from cancer.
Breast cancer patients who undergo a mastectomy undergo a surgery where, depending upon the circumstance, either one or both of the breasts are removed.
Small Percentage of Patients Have Follow-Up Surgery
Dr. Michael Miller, the director of the division of plastic surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center says that only about 50 percent of mastectomy patients are candidates for reconstructive surgery.
Although, only about 10 percent of patients who are eligible receive the surgery.
“Our goal is to integrate reconstructive surgery into the entire treatment plan for the patient; it should not be an afterthought,” says Miller.
New Techniques for Surgery
Miller and other respected surgeons agree that reconstructive surgery is safer than ever and doesn't interfere with treatments for breast cancer.
“Newly developed techniques use a woman's own tissue, giving a natural look and minimizing long-term complications,” explains Miller.
