Dimpled pockets of fat, commonly known as cellulite, plague more than 80 percent of the female population. Some experts consider cellulite a kind of biological advantage – an effective way of storing energy for childbirth.
However, most women consider cellulite a rather unsightly disadvantage and spend a great deal of energy trying to get rid of it. In fact, cellulite eradication has become more than a billion dollar industry annually.
Cellulite-fighting Treatments & Therapies
Cellulite most frequently accumulates in the lower body, specifically the hips, thighs, and buttocks. There are numerous treatment options for those wishing to eradicate cellulite, although some are more effective than others.
Creams – One of the most inexpensive options for treating cellulite, rub-on creams contain ingredients that can constrict blood vessels and draw moisture out of the skin. The result is a temporary tightening effect. The downside of such creams is that they typically take months to work.
Endermologie – An FDA approved mechanical massage device that some believe stimulates blood flow and lymphatic drainage to smooth out the skin. At least 14 treatments are required over a seven-week period for maximum effectiveness. To maintain results, monthly treatments are necessary.
Wraps – Many wraps use seaweed extracts that act as a diuretic and cause quick water weight loss. Because it's water and not fat, the effects of a wrap are very temporary, lasting only a few hours.
Injections – The FDA has approved Restylane injections for use on the face, although some doctors use the injections to treat cellulite on the buttocks and thighs. The results typically last for several months.
Diet & Exercise – A healthy diet and exercise regimen is important not only for helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite but also for maintaining overall wellbeing.
