Patients considering a breast augmentation, facelift, liposuction, or similar procedure typically conduct some level of research to ensure that their surgeon is properly trained and qualified.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case with less invasive procedures, particularly those involving the hair, skin, and nails. People are more complacent about such treatments and are often willing to put themselves in the hands of strangers with little or questionable training.

Beauty Services Have Risks

Beauty services offered at nail and tanning salons as well as at cosmetic laser spas, although not invasive, are not without risk. Bacterial and fungal infections, allergic reactions, scars, burns, and damaged eyesight are all risks a person undergoing a beauty treatment may face.

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, approximately half of its 2,400 members reported an increase in injuries caused by non-physicians – some with only one day of training – performing advanced beauty treatments.

Consumer Tips & Responsibilities

Consumers face the difficult task of finding a trustworthy technician. The difficulty of this task is further compounded by the fact that regulations and professional qualifications vary on a state-to-state basis, and credentials can sometimes be misleading.

The key for consumers is to not only check credentials, but also to seek out recommendations from others. Other tips for those interested in beauty services and procedures include:

  • Ask questions. What is the technician's background and training? What happens in the event that something goes wrong? What are the risks? What are the sanitary standards?
  • Do not choose a procedure or service based on price alone. If the cost is significantly lower than average, be wary.
  • Walk away if you have doubts.
  • See a doctor immediately if you experience adverse side effects after a procedure.
