While traditionally not a common procedure, labiaplasty—or cosmetic vaginal surgery—is becoming increasingly popular among women. The procedure has been around for years, which raises the question, why the sudden surge in popularity?

“Taste has changed,” said Dr. Peter Geldner, a plastic surgeon in Chicago. “It's the way many women deal with their pubic hair, the Brazilian waxes and the like. What previously couldn't really be seen to a large degree is now quite visible.”

This fact makes women more self-conscious, he said. Consequently, when standing naked, women “don't want the labia minor, or the inner lips, hanging so they're visible.”

More Reasons

According to Dr. Lauren Streicher, assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, labiaplasty is gaining popularity for more reasons than women's growing self-consciousness.

“I think more women are aware it's an option. And the idea of plastic surgery is something that's more comfortable in our society in general. And I also think it's regional. This is something that has been going on on the West Coast and has been popular there for some time,” she said.

Two Types of Labiaplasty Patients

Geldner identified two types of patients who seek labiaplasty: those whose labia minora is so large that it causes persistent pain or hinders daily activity and those who want to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the labia.

The procedure only takes about an hour to perform and downtime is minimal. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a week of the surgery, which costs anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000.

Patients considering labiaplasty should consult with a board certified plastic surgeon and ask to seek before and after photos. To locate a board certified plastic surgeon near you, please contact us today.
