For many, sculpted abs represent the holy grail of physical fitness. Six-pack abs, as they are commonly referred to, are sought after by men and women alike. The one part of the body that when sculpted is sure to turn heads, chiseled abs are not always easy to achieve.

Now, however, it may be possible to attain six-pack abs without ever doing crunches or other ab-defining exercises. A new procedure called high-definition LipoSelection uses ultrasound energy to liquefy stubborn fat, which is then sculpted to look like muscle.

LipoSelection: The Procedure

“In essence we sculpt, selectively remove fat that we want to remove leaving thin layers behind. Those layers give the appearance of muscular definition,” said Denver plastic surgeon Dr. John Millard. He is the only doctor in the country who performs the procedure.

Dr. Millard said that LipoSelection is perfect for women and men who have a little bit of stubborn fat in the abdominal area but are not overweight. “In other words, they are not looking to look thinner per se. They are looking to look better,” he said.

So far, only 40 patients have undergone the procedure. As with all surgical procedures, LipoSelection carries some risks including: blood clots, adverse reaction to anesthesia, fluid loss, infection, and skin or nerve damage.

Patients can expect a recovery time of about a week. After two weeks, patients begin to notice a difference. It may take up to four months for patients to see the final results.

The procedure works best on the pectorals, obliques, rib area, and glutes. LipoSelection generally costs between $8,000 and $15,000.
