FDA Approves SmartLipo For Improved Liposuction

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently approved the hottest new fat zapping technique—SmartLipo.

The procedure involves the use of an advanced laser that works its magic beneath the surface of the skin, offering patients numerous advantages over the traditional liposuction procedure.

Fat Zapper

With SmartLipo, a patient's fat is zapped before it's removed from the body. “Actually, the fat comes out more liquefied, not like in clumps,” says Dr. Daniel Man, one of the first plastic surgeons in the U.S. trained to perform SmartLipo.

This means less trauma, blood loss, and bruising for patients who opt to undergo liposuction. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia—rather than general—so patients stay awake, decreasing the risk of anesthesia complications.

Furthermore, smaller cannulas are used in SmartLipo to remove fat, so no stitches are needed to close the tiny incisions. And the greatest advantage of the procedure—it tightens and smoothes loose skin.

“The heating up of the laser causes some changes in the collagen underneath the skin and there's the tightening effect that is obtained,” said Man.

Trained Doctors

While SmartLipo is a fast, relatively painless procedure that can be administered on almost any area of the body, patients are warned to choose a highly experienced board certified plastic surgeon with extensive training with this technology to avoid the risk of burning and other complications.
