Solving Hair Loss Problems

Over the weekend the 66th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology was held in San Antonio, TX.

Key speaker at the meeting, Amy McMichael, associate professor at Wake Forest School of Medicine spoke about the common causes of hair loss and various treatments that are now available to both men and women who are experiencing hair loss issues.

Most Common Form of Hair Loss

According to McMichael, the most common form of hair loss is known as androgenetic alopecia.

This condition is hereditary and can affect both men and women.

For men, a receding hairline is most common, as well as hair loss on the top of the scalp.
Women typically lose their hair in their frontal hairline and can also have visible thinning over the top of their scalp.

Effective Treatments

“For both men and women, hair loss can be devastating and adversely affect one’s overall quality of life,” explained Dr. McMichael. “As with most medical conditions, the key to controlling the hair loss cycle is to seek treatment early.”

Researchers claim that an effective treatment for hair loss is hair transplantation.

Dr. McMichael says that the surgery for hair transplantation has improved significantly over the years and creates a look so natural that it often goes undetected.

A new light treatment called Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) also became recently FDA approved to treats patients with hair loss.
