Nowadays, spa-goers are looking for more than a half-hour massage and a facial. They want diet and skin-care tips, advice on how to stay relaxed, healthy and fit, and products that will allow them to recreate the experience at home.

According to the International Spa Association, which gathered in New York recently for its annual meeting, a major trend being seen in today's spa services is an overall shift toward integration.

Specifically, spas are seeking out ways to differentiate themselves and their services by integrating cosmetic treatments, like facials, manicures, and pedicures, into holistic therapies involving relaxation techniques and spirituality.

Spas: Five Growing Trends

Themes that emerged out of last month's annual spa meeting include:

  • Wellness – Spas are now offering health and wellness programs, including medical care and nutrition and fitness programs, to complement cosmetic treatments.
  • Food – Today's spas are offering more extensive menus, replacing raw veggies and skinless chicken with foods that look, smell, and taste good.
  • Authenticity – Many spas are attempting to distinguish themselves by making use of regional landscapes and traditions. Depending on their location, some spas offer products such as wraps and body scrubs made from local berries or plants.
  • Masculinity – With an increasing number of men seeking out spa treatments, spas are now starting to offer gender-based products and services to appeal to a growing client base.
  • Fun – Spas are also beginning to appeal to their clients' sense of fun. Some spas are offering astrology readings and tailoring spa treatments accordingly. Others offer weaving, painting, and story telling groups.
