Sunscreens Can Harm Skin When Improperly Used

It is no secret that UV exposure is responsible for accelerating the visible signs of aging. Fortunately, most people are now aware that sunscreen is essential to preserving the youthful appearance of skin by protecting it from the sun's harmful rays.

However, a new study shows that sunscreens only work effectively when applied properly. When improperly used, sunscreens may have the opposite effect – damaging the skin instead of protecting it.

Sunscreen Study

Chemists at the University of California, Riverside, found that unless liberally and frequently applied, sunscreen can actually attack the skin, making it more vulnerable to UV radiation.

“Sunscreens do an excellent job protecting against sunburn when used correctly. Our data show, however, that if coverage at the skin surface is low, the UV filters in sunscreens that have penetrated into the epidermis can potentially do more harm than good,” said lead researcher, Kerry Hanson.

She suggests that individuals use high-quality sunscreens with UVA filters – applied continuously while in the sun -- to prevent visible signs of aging.

The study will be published in the next issue of Free Radical Biology & Medicine .
