1 in 5 Americans Sees Cosmetic Surgery on the Horizon
Nearly 20 percent of Americans see cosmetic surgery on their horizon, according to a new consumer perspective survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
According to the AACS Consumer Perspective Survey, most of the individuals who indicated a desire to someday undergo cosmetic surgery included women, young adults, and individuals living closer to the West Coast.
However, men were not altogether opposed to cosmetic surgery, particularly in cases where it might make them more competitive in the workplace. Approximately 12 percent of the men surveyed said they wanted some kind of cosmetic procedure.
The survey involved interviews with men and women between the ages of 18 and 65 who were representative of over 1.4 million homes across the United States. Other findings of the survey include the following:
- 54 percent of survey participants cited potential costs as the primary deterrent for not having cosmetic surgery
- 46 percent said they would prefer to spend disposable income on cosmetic surgery over a luxury car or expensive vacation
- 51 percent of men said they most wanted Nick Lachey's abs
- 46 percent of women said they most envied Jennifer Aniston's eyes
Jeff Knezovich, executive vice president of the AACS, said the results seem to suggest changing trends. In the 1960s and 1970s, cosmetic surgery was “rarely talked about,” compared to nowadays when it's a common “dinner table conversation.”
“People are becoming more aware of cosmetic surgery and its benefits,” he said.
