A recent Australian study suggests that breast implants coated with a thin layer of titanium may help prevent post-operative hardening and deformity, including a condition known as capsular contracture.

Capsular contracture—one of the most common complications associated with traditional saline and silicone breast implants—occurs when scar tissue forms and creates a capsule around the implant, resulting in a stiff and misshapen breast.

According to researchers, a microscopic titanium coating around the implant may help to reduce or prevent this complication in women with breast implants.

“The idea is the body sees the titanium, not the silicone, and it won’t react. There is a significant problem so it’s exciting to try to find ways to avoid it,” said Dr. Daniel Fleming, leader of the study.

Researchers are still evaluating the results of the 3,000 patient study.
