How Young is Too Young?

At this point we know that plastic surgery is pretty much accepted in society. Undergoing cosmetic procedures to achieve a desired look is not too uncommon. However, while plastic surgery was primarily reserved for the older patient who sought a more youthful look, it has become apparent that more and more young women and men are going under the knife.

According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 10 percent of American patients who get facial plastic surgery are under 20-years-old.

“Now with reality TV, the Internet, and the prices being affordable, it has entered the mainstream,” says Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Charles Lee. “Celebrities are younger, and they are having plastic surgery more than before. This is influencing the young people today.”

Other doctors say the less invasive techniques and faster recovery times are some more factors that contribute to younger patients undergoing plastic surgery.

While plastic surgery can offer benefits to some youths who suffer from severe low self-esteem related to their physical appearance, many believe that the increase in young cosmetic surgery patients can be a dangerous trend.

“From teens to twenties, your body is in flux,” says Dr. Mary Lynn Moran. “Hormones are in flux, and your face is in flux. In some women, self-esteem has not evolved to make a decision that's life-lasting.”

Moran adds that younger patients would benefit more from temporary, less-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures such as lip augmentation. However, every single plastic surgery patient should do their research about risks and benefits as well as maintain realistic expectations before making any decisions.
