Researchers Look at Ultrasound for Skin Tightening

There may be a new option in the never-ending quest for younger looking skin: ultrasound. A recent study looked at the anti-aging benefits of an innovative ultrasound device and the results were promising.

“This study looked into the safety and efficacy of an ultrasound device to tighten loose skin. Therapeutic ultrasound is highly adaptable for this purpose and we wanted to explore its use,” said Dr. Murad Alam.

The Research
For the study, researchers used ultrasound to target loose or slightly sagging skin in the facial area of 32 women and 3 men. Photographs of the participants were evaluated before treatment, immediately following treatment, and then at various intervals over the next three months.

Nearly 90 percent of the patients experienced brow elevation of at least 0.5 millimeters. Side effects were minimal but included temporary tenderness, redness and swelling. Those with scleroderma or similar disorders should avoid the procedure, researchers said.

The Need for Non-Invasive Procedures
“Many people are interested in reversing the signs of aging in a non-invasive way. We will be looking into refining the treatment protocol with this particular device to enhance patient outcomes,” said Dr. Alam.

Researchers presented their findings at a meeting of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS).
