Miami, Los Angeles, New York City, and San Diego — all made the Forbes top ten list of “America’s Vainest Cities,” but surprisingly, none of these came in number one. The winner: Salt Lake City, Utah.

When one thinks of plastic surgery, one doesn’t automatically think of Salt Lake City, which is perhaps why it’s so shocking that the city topped the recently published list.

The Calculation
But when Forbes conducted a per capita calculation of ASPS member surgeons for each 100,000 people in the 50 most populous cities, Salt Lake City came in first with six surgeons per 100,000 residents.

New York City has substantially more plastic surgeons than Salt Lake City—591 compared to 45. Comparatively however, NYC only has four plastic surgeons per 100,000 people.

Several Shockers
Other shocking cities that made the list include Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee.

One reason for such surprising entries is that more young and affluent people are moving into these areas. Another reason may be an increase in the number of body contouring procedures on people who have lost significant amounts of weight. Nashville ranked seventh on the Forbes list of “Most Obese Cities.”

Whatever the reason, one thing is certain—plastic surgery is more popular than it’s ever been. Approximately 11 million Americans underwent a cosmetic procedure last year, nearly a twofold increase from 2000.
