Hair loss is no longer something that only plagues men, with an estimated 28 million women experiencing hair loss in America today.

As more women are asking why and immediately seeking treatment, doctors say it's not uncommon for women to lose their hair as they age, just as their male counterparts do.

Hair Loss Said To Be Common

According to Dr. Marcia Cave, a physician at Deaconess Women's Hospital, approximately one woman per month is admitted to the hospital for hair loss treatment.

“I have seen about 34 patients today, and about four have talked about their hair loss. It's very common,” explains Cave.

Reasons For Hair Loss In Women

According to doctors, there are several contributing factors to hair loss in women. Some of the main causes include:

  • Stress
  • Medical Condition
  • Hormones
  • Genetics

Dr. Cave claims the two most common ages for hair loss in women are those in their early 20's and women who are going through menopause.

Extreme change in life, such as graduating from college, getting married, and giving birth can cause an increase in the rate of thinning hair.

Treating Hair Loss

Stress induced hair loss is often temporary and hair often grows back when an individual's stress levels become balanced.

However, the only known treatment for hereditary hair loss is cosmetic surgery, says hair loss specialist Lou Robichaud.

Hair transplants for women are becoming much more common,” explained Robichaud, “ over-the-counter treatments do not grow hair back, they simply maintain the hair a woman already has.”
