Cosmetic Surgery: Will It Boost Your Career?
This is an era where “ageism” exists in all facets of our lives. The ever-increasing fountain of youth is entering the workforce with vim and vigor leaving baby boomers wondering how to compete in a superficial job market.
Cosmetic surgery, Botox and other de-aging skin treatments are becoming prevalent for executives of both sexes for fear of being perceived in the workplace as “over the hill.” Let’s face it—this is an extremely “looks” oriented society.
A recent survey of senior executives by ExecuNet, a networking and job-search service, found that 82% consider age bias a serious problem in the workforce and 94% in their 40’s and 50’s thought it cost them a shot at a particular job.
Dr. Sherrell Aston, a New York plastic surgeon says that 17% of his patients undergo eyelid surgery and about 11% choosing facelifts are male, double the percentage of 10 years ago.
“We see a lot of high placed executives from every industry who want to look better for themselves but also to look vigorous and up to their jobs,” Aston commented.
SAGGING FACE AND SAGGING CAREER—MEN AFFECTED?
According to U.S. government statistics, a growing number of people are seeking cosmetic surgery to get ahead in the workplace. The ever-increasing number of cosmetic surgeries more then doubled for men in 2004 and increases each year.
In a recent nationwide study about the subject of men, aging and cosmetic surgery 84% of men surveyed believed that power and success on the job comes from physical attractiveness, 42% felt that improving one thing about their face would help their career and, 32% agreed a more youthful appearance would positively impact their job success.
Favored procedures among men include facial surgeries such as facelifts, forehead lifts, cosmetic eyelid surgery, chin augmentation, rhinoplasty/nose surgery and liposuction. However, some executives are choosing less expensive and invasive treatments such as Botox injections as well as cosmetic treatments such as chemical peels and collagen.
HOW TO LOOK YOUNGER
Exercise, diet, good mental health, staying up on today’s new trends, a positive attitude, and cosmetic surgery could really make a difference in your career. As Jeri Sedlar, a career coach wrote, “Don’t Retire, Rewire.”
Sedlar has undergone skin rejuvenation treatments himself but never lost sight of taking care of his mental health and keeping up on all the newest technologies.
“It’s a lot less important how old someone is than whether they are young in attitude.”
