The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new injectable filler, ArteFill®, for the treatment of nasolabial folds, also called smile lines, according to announcement made today by the product's maker, Artes Medical.

ArteFill differs from other injectable wrinkle fillers in that it is non-resorbable. Because the body cannot metabolize it, ArteFill offers patients a permanent solution for treating facial wrinkles.

“Based on ArteFill's proven results and high level of patient satisfaction observed in our clinical trials, ArteFill addresses the unmet patient demand for enduring wrinkle correction,” said president of Artes Medical, Diane Goostree.

The filler is a gel comprised primarily of the company's patented synthetic microspheres and purified bovine collagen. Like other dermal fillers, ArteFill is injected directly into the wrinkle, smoothing it out and providing a permanent support structure.

According to Artes Medical, the most common side effects associated with ArteFill injections include lumpiness, redness, swelling, and increased sensitivity at the injection site.

The company plans to market the new filler directly to dermatologists, cosmetic, and plastic surgeons.
