Guide to Illinois Plastic Surgery
Some of the finest practitioners of aesthetic plastic surgery in the country can be found in Illinois. Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, Loyola and the University of Illinois all have medical schools in the Chicago area alone. The University of Illinois has medical schools in four cities and the one in Chicago is somewhat oriented to urban, community based medicine. However their residency program includes plastic surgery, both reconstructive and cosmetic. That’s an indication of how cosmetic plastic surgery has become interwoven in our social fabric and a mainstream option in the American pursuit of happiness.
Downtown Chicago’s loop area has a substantial number of medical practitioners located there and a number of them are plastic surgeons. Just as in the suburbs there are ‘ambulatory surgery clinics’ where a patient may walk in, undergo a tummy tuck or eyelid surgery or a breast augmentation under some degree of anesthesia and leave later the same day. These clinics have become both office and operating room for many plastic surgeons, as so many of today’s aesthetic plastic surgery procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis.
The number of cosmetic plastic surgeons who are headquartered in the Chicago suburbs also speaks to the popularity of liposuction and Botox, facial fillers and laser skin treatment among those who live outside the city limits. There are long established clinics in Oak Brook, Elmhurst, Orland Park, Wilmette, Highland Park and many of the other towns surrounding Chicago proper.
Downstate also has many established aesthetic plastic surgery practices – Urbana Champaign, where the University of Illinois has another medical school; Peoria; Bloomington; Decatur; Springfield – all of these cities have established practices of board certified plastic surgeons.
If you’re an Illinois resident, there are cosmetic plastic surgery options in every direction. In many practices, you’ll find surgeons that have taken advantage of the upsurge in cosmetic plastic surgery to become specialists in certain areas. You will find board certified surgeons who focus on breast augmentation and, perhaps, body lifts; others may focus on maxillofacial cosmetic procedures such as eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and brow lifts.
When you are interviewing doctors, be sure to inquire about his or her board certification. You should look for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, the best respected certifying body for professionals in the trade. Finally make sure that, if you are going to be treated in an outpatient facility, it too has been inspected and certified by a legitimate certification organization.
