Guide to Kansas Plastic Surgery
Kansas is the prototypical Plains State, heavily agricultural with two or three climate zones – all of which are susceptible to tornadoes, as we learned from the Wizard of Oz. Today the state is home to nearly three million people, its major cities being Wichita, Kansas City/Overland Park, and Lawrence. While Lawrence is home to the University of Kansas, its medical school is in Kansas City.
The University of Kansas had its origins in a teaching hospital founded in 1905. The hospital, now a quasi public authority known as The University of Kansas Hospital, is part of a large campus known as the University of Kansas Medical Center that is comprised of the School of Medicine, School of Allied Health, School of Nursing, Graduate Studies, Kansas University Research Institute, and several other research and clinical centers.
The medical school has a plastic surgery section that teaches both reconstructive surgery and some of the cosmetic applications that have developed from such medical reconstructions as maxillofacial surgery. There is also a large clinical presence in Wichita, so the school’s interns, residents and graduates can be found in both cities refining their craft.
Also in Wichita are several cosmetic plastic surgery clinics offering the latest technology in breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, liposuction, Botox and other filler products, and the rest of the standard aesthetic surgery procedures that are found in most clinics. There is an interesting mix of cosmetic plastic surgery with other medical practices in the area. One optical group that provides all sorts of ophthalmology and optician care – from contact lenses and spectacles to eye infections and glaucoma – also offers cosmetic plastic surgery for eyelids and the brow area. They operate 26 facilities.
Another medical group of doctors that operate multiple medical clinics in the Wichita area also have a single site for cosmetic surgical and spa treatment procedures. This medical partnership has chosen to fold aesthetic medicine into its standard pediatric, geriatric and general medicine services. It’s an interesting merger since cosmetic plastic surgery is generally practiced as a free-standing specialty in facilities devoted solely to the practice.
Kansas City and the adjoining Overland Park also have a number of aesthetic surgery clinics offering body enhancement services that are definitely geared to the middle class; descriptions of the nature of the procedures, the surgical requirements for breast augmentations, face lifts and so forth, are folded in with discussions of what insurance will and will not cover as well as two or three payment plan options. It’s quite possible that you’ll find more reasonable prices in Kansas than across the river in the much bigger city of Kansas City Missouri.
