Guide to Louisiana Plastic Surgery
Just as other residents and businesses, Louisiana’s medical community took a big hit when Hurricane Katrina came through. Both Tulane University’s fine medical school and Louisiana State University’s med school are located in New Orleans and were rendered non-functional for significant periods following the disaster. However both those schools have turned out generations of physicians that have set up practice in New Orleans and its suburbs such as Metairie, Kenner, River Ridge, Harahan, Elmwood, and Jefferson. These are but a few of the communities surrounding New Orleans on both sides of the river; it is in these communities that many of the medical services, including cosmetic plastic surgery, are to be found.
On the academic front, however, Tulane Medical School’s Division of Plastic Surgery maintains a clinic in New Orleans as part of their health center complex. Much of their work is in reconstructive surgery, but there is also an aesthetic surgery component to the clinic and might be a good resource for someone in search of the right physician for a breast augmentation or facial rejuvenation.
LSU also has an aesthetic surgery center that offers cosmetic surgical procedures within the setting of a teaching hospital. LSUSM’s description of Katrina’s impact:
“The complex that housed the School of Medicine was flooded as were five of the hospitals to which residents from the Department of Surgery were deployed. With extraordinary fluidity, the entire program in the Department of Surgery morphed from a Department centered in the downtown business district to a much more diversified program, having even stronger ties with the communities of Baton Rouge and Lafayette, Louisiana. In both of these communities, more than 70% of the practicing surgeons were products of the LSU training program in New Orleans. These physicians welcomed our residents and incorporated them into their diversified practices, allowing the residents to increase their clinical experience by 25% …”
Surgeons from these and other fine schools are scattered through not only Baton Rouge and Lafayette, but Shreveport and Lake Charles as well. Shreveport has two ear, nose and throat (ENT) clinics that handle medical problems with sinuses, throats, esophageal problems, ear infections, throat cancer, allergies, swallowing disorders, etc. – along with Facial plastic and reconstruction surgery (rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, otoplasty, etc.)
Finding a quality aesthetic plastic surgeon in Louisiana simply requires gravitating to the metro areas; you’ll find a wide selection of choices in each of them. Seeking a referral from one of the medical school clinics is also a cautious choice. Opting for breast augmentation or a Botox treatment or a tummy tuck may seem like a radical decision, but finding the right surgeon to do it should involve a careful and thorough search.
