Guide to Maine Plastic Surgery

Much of Maine’s health care is built on a rural model – or rather, has evolved from a rural model.  Portland has two excellent acute care facilities with affiliated clinics, and many of the smaller towns that are regional in scope have state-supported hospitals and clinics as well.  Augusta, Bangor and Brunswick are the other metro areas with well developed medical facilities.

An excellent example of how cosmetic plastic surgery has meshed with Maine’s medical practices is the hand and general reconstructive surgery clinic in South Portland that has grown into a full service cosmetic surgery facility as well.  This clinic offers reconstructive surgery for hand injuries right alongside breast augmentations, tummy tucks and liposuction.  The surgeons have also learned the art of Botox injections and the use other artificial fillers as well as fat cells.

There is also a clinic in Bangor that combines aesthetic plastic surgery with specialization in reconstructive surgery of the hand.  Another uniquely Maine touch is the Bangor plastic surgeon that performs breast augmentations, face and brow lifts, liposuction and rhinoplasty in the converted carriage house next to his home.  This practice combines body contouring with abdominoplasty that follows significant weight loss – once again combining the medically oriented uses of plastic surgery with body enhancement.

Many of the more prominent surgeons in Maine that retain hospital affiliations do so with Dartmouth’s Hitchcock Medical Center or facilities affiliated with the University of Vermont.  Just recently, Tufts Medical School from Massachusetts formalized a relationship with one of the two major medical centers in Portland, Maine.

The result of all this cross-fertilization is the development of cosmetic surgery specialists and facilities as an extension of existing medical practices.  Maine simply does not have the population to support multiple facilities dedicated solely to the practice of cosmetic plastic surgery and the affiliated spa-oriented services such as facial peels and laser hair removal.  You can find every sort of aesthetic procedure somewhere in Maine, but it is difficult to find all of them in one place with specialists in the major procedures.
