Guide to Michigan Plastic Surgery
Michigan can lay claim to one of the great universities in the country, which in turn operates one of the most respected public medical schools in the country as well. The University of Michigan has a large and diversified health services center affiliated with the Medical School, along with working alliances with a number of hospitals and other acute care facilities.
Most of their cosmetic surgery is performed at the University of Michigan Hospital, which has outpatient surgical facilities as well as the standard acute-care surgical facilities found in most hospitals. The cosmetic surgery division functions like any other medical specialty clinic, offering some twenty procedures (with multiple variations) that are performed by board certified surgeons who may be observed or assisted by residents.
That remarkable facility is found in Ann Arbor. In and around Detroit you will find another concentration of health care complexes, and a number of private cosmetic plastic surgery facilities as well. Many are in the suburbs such as Bloomfield Hills and Auburn Hills. Many cosmetic plastic surgeons established themselves outside of Detroit proper twenty years ago or more. Today you’ll find full service outpatient plastic surgery centers scattered around the perimeter of Detroit, along with some that remain in the city affiliated with health centers there.
Grand Rapids has a large contingent of aesthetic plastic surgeons, for a city of less than 200,000. There are several clinics operated by board-certified plastic surgeons who offer both surgical procedures (breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, brow lifts, eyelid surgery, neck lifts) and non-surgical treatment (Botox injections, other fillers, liposuction, microdermabrasion, laser skin treatment and hair removal, etc.)
Lansing has Michigan State University, which also operates surgery clinics at six different locations around the state in conjunction with its other health services. Much of their medical service is community oriented; they are a major public health service provider. However the medical school is large and diversified; their surgery department no doubt teaches how to deal with situations where reconstructive surgery meets cosmetic surgery, in maxillofacial surgical situations that call for repair of deformities, or breast reconstruction following a mastectomy that may provide an opportunity for enhancement as well.
Some of Michigan’s plastic surgeons have gravitated to the well-off suburbs; others remain in and around the state’s distressed cities with chronic employment problems – cities such as Flint. What is more important than the location of your cosmetic plastic surgeon is his or her board certification, and certification status for the facility in which they work.
