Plastic Surgery Benefits for Mastectomy Patients
Plastic Surgery Benefits for Mastectomy Patients
October 18, 2007 -
For breast cancer patients who need mastectomies, more reconstructive choices are now available and studies show that having surgery can be significantly beneficial. According to statistics, however, few cancer survivors are opting for the beneficial surgeries that are available to them.
The Benefits of Reconstructive Surgery
The principal benefit of reconstructive surgery for recovering cancer patients is that is helps to improve and better their overall quality of life.
The surgery varies from case to case, depending upon each individual’s cancer; however, in a mastectomy at least one of the breasts is removed.
Small Amount of Patients Have Surgery
According to Dr. Michael Miller from the Ohio State Medical Center, about 50 percent of mastectomy patients are eligible for follow-up reconstructive surgery.
However, due to a lack of knowledge regarding the safety and benefits of reconstructive surgery, only about 10 percent of these patients actually get surgery.
Our goal is to integrate reconstructive surgery into the entire treatment plan for the patient; it should not be an afterthought, says Miller.

Viewing Surgery Via Video Before Operation
October 11, 2007 -
A new form of video hosting has been created to help women who are considering getting plastic surgery.
Videos are being made available so that patients can view what goes on during breast augmentation surgeries in order to evaluate whether or not the surgery is something that they truly want to go through with.
Plastic surgeons believe that these videos that show the surgery process step by step, such as the ones shown on Breast Implants 411, can help potential patients feel more comfortable about entering the operating room.
Online Videos
Considering breast implants are becoming more widely accepted in America and since more and more women are going under the knife to enhance their chest size, online videos are ideal ways for them to be assured that they are making the right decision.
We are highly excited, explains David Dean, the current CEO of Breast Implants 411. We are thrilled to be moving into the 21 st Century with such a dynamic product that simultaneously helps plastic surgeons and patients.
Web Interaction
The online videos that are catered towards future patients also enable them to talk with former patients who have already undergone surgery about what to expect and the various side effects that could occur.
Not only do these specific websites allow patients to see first hand what goes in to specific surgeries, but they also encourage previous patients to share their stories and experiences with others.

View of Breast Augmentation Surgery Changes
October 4, 2007 -
Breast augmentation surgery has been performed for decades; however, in recent years the procedure has become safer and the public has become more accepting of women who get breast implants.
There was once an image that people who got breast implants were more exotic in some way or somehow out there, says Richard A. DAmico, But breast augmentation is a procedure among mainstream women nowadays. And in my practice, most women who want breast implants have had several children and lost the fullness in their breasts and just want to restore what they had.
Reality TVs Influence
Heidi Montag, the star of MTVs reality show, The Hills, recently admitted to getting a breast augmentation.
It was reportedly so important to her that she didnt even mind the slight risk that the procedure could not go as planned.
Right before I went in, I was like, What if I dont wake up? Montag told Us Weekly Magazine, Then I thought, I dont care, its worth it. I just wanted it so badly.
According to Elizabeth Battaglino Cahill, the executive of the resource center, The media has had a strong impact on breast-implant awareness. You see these surgery shows all the time on television-from the Discovery Channel to Dr. 90210, along with the shows that focus on makeovers.
Implant Advancement
Last year alone, more than 329,000 women got breast implants, a number which is 10 times as much as the amount that were getting the procedure 15 years ago when the surgery first began being performed.
DAmico says the increase could also be because the shells for both silicone and saline implants are now stronger and last longer.
Reports show that the average implant today lasts for 12 to 15 years, whereas some older sets only lasted a few years.

Life Changing Events Lead Women to Alter Appearance
September 27, 2007 -
A new survey conducted by the National Women’s Health Resource Center (NWHRC) shows that women who undergo life changing events like giving birth, enduring a significant weight loss, and divorce are more likely to get breast augmentation.
Of the women who are motivated, for whatever reason, to improve their appearance, 45 percent of the women involved in the study said they would consider plastic surgery to do so.
The Survey
The NWHRC survey was aimed to challenge the stereotypes that are often associated with women who get breast implants.
The results showed that more than half of the women surveyed are more accepting of breast augmentation surgery today then they used to be.
The women even described those who underwent surgery, as appearing more confident and feminine.
My typical breast aesthetic patient looks just like your sister, your neighbor or the school librarian. She’s well-educated, savvy, and she has turned her attention back onto herself after years of taking care of everyone else, explains Caroline Glassman, M.D. a plastic surgeon in New Jersey.
Regaining Their Figure
According to reports, 91 percent of women who were surveyed said their desire to reshape their breasts followed a major physical change, such as a significant weight loss or going through childbirth.
This research tells us significant life events influence a woman’s overall outlook on life, empowering her to pursue a healthy lifestyle and her own beauty goals, explains Elizabeth Battaglino Cahill, executive vice president of the NWHRC.

Breast Reduction Popular Amongst Soldiers
September 20, 2007 -
According to new reports, more and more men and women from the military are having breast reduction operations.
Dr. Mark Jabor from the Cosmetic Laser and Cosmetic Surgery of El Paso says that he has seen an increase in the number of men who are opting to get a breast reduction, and many of his patients are in the military.
New Army Health Requirements
Last spring, the U.S. Army reportedly changed its health requirements for soldiers.
Each year, active military is required to pass a physical fitness test and meet a certain weight requirement depending upon their height.
My practice tends to see a lot of military people for a variety of reasons, especially since they now have to fulfill certain measurement requirements to stay in good standing, explains Dr. Jabor.
Breast Reduction Surgery Builds Confidence
According to Cesar Duran, a head recruiter for the Army, his breast reduction has helped build his confidence.
I was an overweight person, when I lost over 100 pounds, the breasts still wouldn’t go away, explains Duran. I was always self-conscious about it.
After bandaging his chest for years, Duran finally chose to proceed with the operation and now says he regrets not having done it sooner.
Aftermath of Surgery
Dr. Jabor says that although men will probably be a bit sore after surgery, their recovery time is typically quicker than a woman’s.
He also adds that, Usually the excess fat doesn’t return. If you don’t diet and exercise or change any habits, there are greater chances that it may come back. But it won’t typically return in that area, it will in other areas.

Alternative Method for Breast Reduction Surgery
September 13, 2007 -
Although breast augmentation is one of the top surgeries in America right now, a good portion of patients are now going in for a breast reduction.
A recent study finds that a new technique using a laser is effective in performing a successful breast reduction operation.
Study Regarding Laser
Dr. Grant Stevens, the Medical Director of Marina Plastic Surgery in Southern California headed the study analyzing the effectiveness of a carbon dioxide laser that can replace scalpels and scissors during the procedure.
The study examined how the laser would work when preparing the excess skin in such a way that would allow it to grow together with adjacent skin.
This preparation, known as “deepithelialization” is traditionally done with scissors and scalpels; however, using the carbon dioxide laser was proven, through the study, to be just as effective and may even decrease healing time.
Dr. Stevens study analyzed 367 laser-assisted breast reduction procedures performed using both methods in the past 10 years.
The Findings
Dr. Stevens and his colleagues found that not only was the carbon dioxide laser more effective in breast reduction surgery, but it also helped reduce blood loss in comparison to the more traditional methods.
“These results, combined with the benefits and efficient operating time afforded by laser deepithlialization, indicate that laser-assisted surgery is an excellent alternative to standard methods,” explains Dr. Stevens.
The study has been published in a recent issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal.

New Device to Help Keep Breasts Lifted
September 6, 2007 -
Researchers are currently conducting tests for an innovative new technique to keep breasts lifted as time progress.
The technique for a lift that is currently available is known as Minimally Invasive Mastopexy (MIM).
However, researchers are attempting to market a new device, which they call the CupUp.
The CupUp
Sagging breasts are a natural part of growing older, but researchers claim that with the CupUp women can attain their youthful appearance no matter what their age.
Mastopexy entails a massive interference with both the internal and external breast tissues and it can be a costly and lengthy procedure.
As an alternative, the researchers are building a silicon bra that they hope to successfully insert into patients bodies, attaching it at the ribs and fascia.
The researchers claim that this new procedure will be minimally invasive.
Tests Conducted
The researchers have been conducting tests on pigs since a pigs skin is closest to that of a human.
The CupUp is said to have been successful and caused no complications when it was inserted into the pigs chest wall.

MammoSite Brachytherapy Results Reported
August 30, 2007 -
Recent studies have shown the effectiveness of MammoSite brachytherapy, a treatment used to help women in their early stages of breast cancer.
Researchers are continuing to study the treatment and are comparing it to radiation treatments to determine how breast cancer patients can be treated in the fastest, most effective way.
Breast Cancer Patients Treated
For patients with small, localized breast cancers, the treatment is used as an alternative to a lumpectomy and radiation therapy.
The radioactive implants, brachytherapy, are used to implement a more precise radiation therapy.
Less radiation is usually delivered to the skin with this newer method of treatment than with external beam radiation.
Brachytherapy can usually be administered in five days as opposed to the five to seven weeks that is required for external beam radiation therapy.
What is MammoSite?
The MammoSite is a device that’s used to deliver partial-breast irradiation (APBI).
This FDA approved device comes in the form of a balloon and is placed over the area being operated on and connected by a catheter to the skin.
Study Conducted
In a study conducted at the Beaumont Cancer Institute, 80 patients in the early stages of breast cancer were analyzed.
After a 22 month follow up, researchers found 88 percent of the results to be successful in minimizing the cancer and slowing progression.

Plastic Surgery Study Questioned
August 24, 2007 -
According to a new study conducted on 3,527 Swedish women that was recently published in the New York Times, women with breast implants have an increased chance of suicide or deaths related to substance abuse.
However, many patients who have undergone the surgery, and board certified surgeons disagree with the findings.
Patient Success Stories
Sue and T.C., two women who recently underwent breast augmentation surgery, claim they are nothing but happy about their decision and their newly found confidence.
Both women insist that there is nothing upsetting, deranged, or depressing about having the operation; in fact, they claim they have the opposite feelings and are eager to show their new assets to their girlfriends to encourage them to undergo surgery too.
At 50, Sue wanted her chest to look more in proportion with the rest of her 59 frame, so she went from a 34B to a 34 double D and has no regrets.
T.C. is a 43-year-old wife and mother of two, who after enhancing herself to a C cup feels happier than ever.
Renowned Surgeon Weighs In
Dr. Sheldon Sevinor, a renowned surgeon who does about two breast augmentation surgeries weekly and has been on shows such as The View and Oprah, also disputes the studys claims.
He says there is a reason similar studies havent shown the same results in American women.
However, he does claim that he has refused potential patients before because they have asked him not to inform their psychiatrist, something that Dr. Sevinor believes, speaks for itself.

Breast Enhancement Pills vs. Breast Enhancement Surgery
With more and more Americans desiring to enhance their breast size, most are opting for surgery while others are pondering the effectiveness of non-surgical enhancement products.
Although surgery seems more evasive and expensive than taking a pill once a day, some alternatives have proven to fail and can be risky.
Alternatives to Surgery
Researchers recently reviewed many of the pills and creams that are now being manufactured and marketed to supposedly enhance a woman’s natural breast size.
They found that although the number one method used by women to enhance their breast size is surgery, some Americans are resorting to herbal pills and creams.
Pills and creams are often marketed together and customers are advised to use the products for up to six moths several times a day in order to gain a larger bust.
However, it is important to be well informed on the remedy being consumed or applied to your body before using it.
Many breast enhancement pills and creams have not been FDA approved, which increases their potential of harm to those who ingest them.
Breast Enhancement Surgery
With millions getting breast augmentation surgery yearly, the operation remains to be one of the safest methods to increase breast size.
Huge advances have been made in the techniques used during surgery and the results are evident immediately after, as opposed to a year later.
However, this does not mean that breast augmentation surgery doesn’t carry risks as well.
As with any surgery, it is important to be educated on the procedure and to find a board certified surgeon to ensure your health is in good hands.
