Liposuction Technique

In the United States today, liposuction is one of the most desired forms of cosmetic surgery for both men and women. This procedure, which is used to remove unwanted fat pockets, can be performed in several different ways depending upon the patient's individual wants and needs.

What Are the Different Liposuction Techniques?

In 2006, 403,684 Americans had liposuction. With so many getting the procedure, plastic surgeons urge potential patients to explore their options completely before deciding upon what liposuction technique is right for them. The following are some of the more common liposuction techniques:

Tumescent Liposuction- This liposuction technique involves the injection of a large amount of liquid anesthesia into the fatty areas, causing the targeted areas to become "tumescent"- or swollen and firm and making it easier for the cannula to move beneath the skin to remove the fat. Tumescent liposuction is an option for virtually anyone who is a candidate for traditional liposuction. The procedure's benefits include post-operative bruising, swelling and pain.

Laser Liposuction- For those who are looking to rid their bodies of excess weight without having to endure a long recovery period, laser liposuction is a good alternative.
The lasers produce a powerful beam of light and, when turned to a certain frequency, the laser can range from intense heat to cool vaporization. When used at close range during surgical procedures, the laser can efficiently remove fatty tissue.

Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL)- Also known as ultrasonic liposuction, this technique involves the use of a special cannula to liquefy the fat, making it easier to be suctioned out. The procedure is particularly useful for removing fat from fibrous areas such as the upper back or male breasts but takes longer to perform than traditional liposuction.

Microliposuction- Also known as liposculpture, microliposuction typically involves less removal of fat and more refinement of the particular area. The procedure is ideal for removing small pockets of fat in areas such as the face. Due to the smaller volume of fat being removed, the procedure is generally conducted using a smaller cannula.
