Scarless Breast Reduction

Scarless breast reduction is a cosmetic surgical option available to women who seek a reduction in the size and weight of large breasts. Scarless breast reduction employs liposuction techniques in order to successfully reduce the size of the breasts with minimal or no visible scarring. The scarless breast reduction technique not only leaves less visible scarring, it also leaves the nipples intact so that a patient has a greater chance of being able to breastfeed and has less of a chance of losing sensation in the nipple area.

Scarless Breast Reduction Medical Benefits

Women who may be good scarless breast reduction surgical candidates are those who seek to reduce the size and weight of medically troublesome breasts. Scarless breast reduction is performed for medical purposes rather than aesthetic purposes, though this procedure can also enhance the appearance of the breasts. Women who develop large breasts often experience medical problems such as back, neck and shoulder problems, skin irritations, skeletal deformities, and breathing problems. Troublesomely large breasts can also restrict a woman's activity and cause insecurities and self-consciousness.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Good candidates for scarless breast reduction techniques are women who have a good understanding of what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. Patients should be aware of the risks and benefits of scarless breast reduction and take those steps to reduce any potential risks through every part of the surgical process. Prior to scarless breast reduction surgery, patients should also discuss with their surgeon their full medical history and any current medications or supplements they are using. Because scarless breast reduction surgery is performed for medical purposes, health insurance will often cover the expenses related to scarless breast reduction surgery.

Procedure

During the scarless breast reduction procedure, a patient will typically receive a general anesthetic and possibly a sedative. With scarless breast reduction, an incision will only be made in the breast fold, as compared to more traditional techniques that involve incisions running up the center of the breast and around the nipple. Through this incision, the surgeon will insert a thin surgical tube, called a cannula, in order to liposuction out excess fatty breast tissue. As mentioned, this technique is completed without disruption to the nipple area. This can preserve a woman's future ability to breastfeed and causes no disturbance in nipple sensation. The technique is considered a scarless breast reduction procedure because the scars are minimal and usually invisible because of the inconspicuous location under the breast.

Recovery

After scarless breast reduction surgery, there will be follow up instructions given to a patient in order to achieve proper healing and desirable results. Recovery typically takes three to four weeks, during which a patient may experience bruising, swelling, and some discomfort. There are special techniques that a surgeon can employ during scarless breast reduction surgery in order to further mitigate these surgical side effects.
