Male Liposuction

Liposuction has for years been one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery chosen by men in the United States. In 2006, nearly 1 million men had plastic surgery, and liposuction topped the list as most sought after by men.

Most men choose to get liposuction under their chin and around their waist. Male liposuction is also oftentimes used to reduce enlarged male breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia.

The Procedure

Liposuction is best performed on healthy males who are of normal weight but simply have unwanted pockets of fat. Fat deposits can be removed from the tummy, hips, back, butt, knees, thighs, breasts, chest, neck or face during the surgery.

The length of the procedure depends upon the size of the area being worked on, the type of anesthesia, and the technique being used. Liposuction techniques vary, and the technique used depends on patient needs and preferences.

Tumescent Male Liposuction

For men, tumescent liposuction is the most popular and effective technique.

The tumescent technique involves the injection of a liquid solution into the treatment area that's a mixture of salt solution, lidocaine (an anesthetic) and epinephrine (a blood vessel constrictor that reduces blood loss during the procedure). The solution is used to swell and make firm, i.e. tumesce, the area being treated to make fat removal easier.

Preparing for Male Liposuction

Before going in for surgery, your surgeon will give you a strict set of guidelines to ensure that the procedure goes successfully. Some of these guidelines may include:

  • Monitoring your food and drink intake
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Informing your surgeon about any vitamins or additional medications you are taking at the time of the surgery
  • Having blood drawn ahead of time in case it's needed during the procedure
